Tigers stay perfect in conference
Colorado College remained atop the Conference USA standings with a perfect 3-0 record after beating Southern Mississippi 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
CC’s three-game winning streak to open its C-USA schedule matches the program’s best start in six seasons as an affiliate member of the conference set by the 2009 squad that finished second overall during the regular season and advanced to the championship match of the conference tournament.
“We continue to get better and better, and I’m impressed with this group in terms of their resiliency and how hard they’ve worked,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “Today was proof of that. We played very well against Southern Miss on their home field. We took a lot of shots, created great chances and scored three really nice goals.”
Kaeli Vandersluis struck for the only goal Colorado College would need just 3:59 into the game. The freshman midfielder converted on a cross from Madison Whitehead, who extended her career-best point streak to four games. Vandersluis became the fifth different Tiger to notch a game-winning goal in 2011.
Midfielder Jessie Ayers found the net for the third time in four games during the 54th minute when she buried the rebound of forward Lauren DiGregorio’s shot that went off the post.
Then with seven minutes remaining, forward Jaclyn Silsby put the contest out of reach when she scored on a header off a cross from midfielder Hannah Peterson.
Goalkeeper Hanna Berglund and the Colorado College defense recorded their fourth consecutive and fifth overall shutout of the season. The Tigers have now played 382:26 minutes since allowing a goal in the closing minutes of regulation time during the 1-1 tie against Fresno State on Sept. 16.
Next Up: Colorado College wraps up its first conference road trip on Sunday when they visit No. 25 UCF at noon ET.
