Pioneers ranked in preseason polls
The University of Denver men’s soccer team was ranked 19th in the nation by Goal.com and 29th by College Soccer News in their preseason polls.
“It’s nice to be recognized nationally, as our program gains more and more respect,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “However, this is a tribute to last year’s team and its successes. Our players and coaches know that this is a new season, and we all have a lot of work to do in order to achieve our goals.”
The Pioneers kick off the season on Aug. 27 against perennial NCAA powerhouse Creighton, which was ranked No. 6 and No. 8 in the preseason polls. The Bluejays hired legendary head coach Elmar Bolowich, who led North Carolina for 22 years, including the 2001 NCAA champions and College Cup appearances in each of the last three years.
The following week, DU travels to the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind., to face No. 9/11 Notre Dame and No. 6/15 Indiana.
Denver returns 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a squad that won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season championship in 2010 and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, the team’s second in the past three seasons.
