Mines men tip Regis 2-1
Orediggers Tesho Akindele and Jacob Juett scored on each side of a goal by Ranger Ben Fredrickson in the first half on Friday as the Colorado School of Mines defeated Regis University 2-1 in a battle of top 20 teams.
Reflective of the matchup, Regis led in shots (32-10), corners (10-3), and fouls (15-10).
No. 3 ranked Mines, however, found the net first and more often. Akindele scored an unassisted goal in the 6th minute when he took the ball, dribbled around a defender and fired the ball into the lower left corner.
The lead held up until the 31st minute, when Fredrickson collected a pass back from in front of the goal by Kyle Emge and knocked it into the net.
It appeared the 18th-ranked Rangers and the Orediggers would go into the half tied. However, Juett restored the Mines margin in the 45th minute as Chike Sullivan served a ball that Juett headed into the net. For the second half, Oredigger goalkeeper Manville Strand kept the Rangers at bay and earned the win.
With the win, Mines moved to 7-0-0, 4-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Rangers dropped to 5-1-1, 1-1-1 RMAC.
Up next, Regis will face CSU-Pueblo at 7 p.m. next Friday in Pueblo. The conference-leading Orediggers host Metro State (6-1-1, 3-0-1) at noon on Sunday.
