Roadrunners take Southwest Baptist 2-0
Forward Taylor Nicholls netted a brace as No. 10 Metro State shutout Southwest Baptist (Mo.) 2-0 on Monday in non-conference action at Auraria Field.
The Roadrunners improved to 2-0-0 this season with the win, while SBU dropped to 1-1-0. The Bearcats were coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Quincy (Ill.) on Friday.
Nicholls scored her first goal just under 23 minutes into the game as Aleah DeGeneres gave her a through ball from the middle of the field, allowing Nicholls a one-on-one. Nicholls finished from just inside the top of the box.
Just seconds later, DeGeneres had a breakaway of her own, but SBU goalkeeper Paige Hemphill made a sliding stop to keep the score 1-0.
Nicholls scored her second goal less than two minutes into the second half. Nicholls drove in from the left side ahead of the defenders, latched onto a ball from Erica Harrison and again shot it past a charging goalkeeper from just inside the top of the box.
The Bearcats had just two shots on goal and both were stopped ‘keeper Alee Seehausen, making her second consecutive start in net.
Metro State will travel to Minnesota for two games next weekend. The Roadrunners will play at Winona State at 7 p.m. on Friday and at Minnesota State at 11 a.m. on Sunday as they begin a four-game road trip.
